Causes of Eye Injuries

  • Workers handling acids, caustics or welding – subject to injurious gases, vapors, and liquids.
  • Dust, powders, fumes, mists, and very small airborne particles – sources are scaling, light grinding, hammering, spot welding, and woodworking.
  • Flying objects or particles – these cause the majority of eye injuries – sources include caulking, chiseling, grinding, hammering, and metalworking
  • Splash metal – sources are babbitting, casting or hot metal, and dripping hot metal baths.
  • Glare from welding.
  • Thermal and radiation (heat-glare-ultraviolet-infrared rays)
  • Lasers – different kinds of laser beams require different methods of eye protection.
  • Arcing and sparks – Electrical hazards.
  • Swinging objects – Ropes and chains.
