Standard practices, techniques, and operations you must follow include, but are not limited to:

    1. Decontaminate / Autoclave / Incinerate regulated waste before disposal
    2. Keep doors closed
    3. Place contaminated materials in proper containers
    4. Only authorized personnel in work areas and in animal rooms
    5. Place warning signs on access doors when hazards are present
    6. Don’t work with potentially infectious materials on an open bench
    7. Use biological safety cabinets or other containment devices
    8. Wear appropriate PPE when handling OPIM
    9. Do not wear PPE outside the work area
    10. Decontaminate clothing before laundering
    11. Protect vacuum lines with HEPA filters and liquid disinfectant traps
    12. Check vacuum lines routinely and maintain/replace as needed
    13. Use the right needle or syringe for the task
    14. Never bend/shear or replace a needle in the sheath or guard
    15. Never remove a used needle from the syringe following use
    16. Use caution when handling needles/syringes
    17. Place used needles/syringes in a sharps container and decontaminate / autoclave before reuse or disposal
    18. Report all spills/accident immediately
    19. Read, follow and practice instructions in the biosafety manual
    20. Use protective clothing / respirators when exposed to droplets / splashes / spills / aerosols
